BMW Takes Wraps off Slew of 2022 Models

Just a week after it debuted its first all-electric offerings for the U.S. market, BMW’s followed up with the debut of its 2022 X3 and X4 sport-activity offerings plus their X3 M and X4 M siblings, as well as the new 430i Gran Coupe and M440i Gran Coupe.

BMW’s readying its updated 2022 X4 models for their U.S. debut later this year. Its produced at the company’s plant in South Carolina.

The new models get substantive updates inside and out, the company noted, including improvements to the drivetrain, infotainment and safety technology features. In addition, the X3 M40i and X4 M40i feature 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

BMW’s X3 line-up boasts rear-wheel drive X3 sDrive30i, all-wheel drive X3 xDrive30i and M all-wheel drive X3 M40i. The X4 gets the xDrive30i model as well as the X4 M40i. They’ll be produced at the company’s plant in Greer, South Carolina — home to all of its SAV production — alter this summer.

Prices start at $43,700 for the X3 sDrive30i, jumping to $45,700 for the X3 xDrive30i and $57,800 for the X3 M40i. Meanwhile the X4 xDrive30i is $51,800, followed by the X4 M40i at $62,400. Destination of $995 is in addition to all MSRP pricing.

A few tweaks

The X3 M sprints from 0 to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds due to the improved torque for 2022.

The exterior updates do include the much-maligned “beaver teeth” kidney grille for the X3 and X4, although they are smaller than those seen on other new models. The changes also include redesigned headlights, front and rear bumpers, exhaust trim and rear lights.

In terms of performance, the BMW X3 M40i and BMW X4 M40i gain the benefits of a 48-volt mild hybrid-system for the new model year. The mild hybrid technology draws on a 48-volt starter/generator and an additional battery, so it has significantly expanded possibilities when it comes to brake energy recuperation, the company notes.

When the accelerator pedal is released, the generator converts the kinetic energy into electricity, which is stored in the 48-volt battery. Recuperation in coasting mode is particularly intense in Sport mode.

Plenty of performance with new X3 M and X4 M

The new X4 M Competition gets a 37 lb-ft increase in torque for the new model year.

With a new X3 and X4 comes the opportunity for the mad scientists at M GmbH to have some fun, which comes in the form of the 2022 X3 M and X4 M as well as the Competition variant for each one.

Set to hit the market in September, the X3 M and X4 M are powered by a turbocharged inline-6 cylinder. Naturally, it’s been improved for the new models.

The latest version of this engine currently delivers 457 lb-ft of torque in the BMW X3 M and X4 M and 479 lb-ft of torque in Competition tune. This is an increase of 37 lb- ft of torque for the Competition package equipped models and an increase of 13 lb-ft for the 2022 BMW X3 M and BMW X4 M.

The engine features characteristics typical of M, including track-proven cooling and oil supply systems, linear power delivery and a high redline of 7,200 rpm.

The new 430i zips from stop to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds powered by a 2.0-liter twin turbo 4-cylinder engine.

The new increased torque production lowers the 0-60 acceleration time of the BMW X3 M and BMW X4 M from 4.1 seconds to 3.9 seconds and from 4.0 seconds to 3.7 seconds for the Competition package-equipped X3 M and X4 M.

Top speed is an electronically limited 155 mph, which is increased to 177 mph when the optional M Driver’s Package is selected. This package also includes a voucher for driver training at one of the BMW Performance Center driving schools around the country.

Pricing on the new X3 M starts at $69,900 while the X4 M comes in at $73,400, plus the $995 destination charge for both.

Lower is not slower

The new 440i xDrive Gran Coupe was developed with heavy influence of BMW’s motorsports expertise from M GmbH group.

For those only requiring the sport and not the activity, BMW covered that as well with the debut of the second-generation 4 Series Gran Coupe. The Bavarian brand revealed two offerings: the 430i Gran Coupe and the M440i Gran Coupe.

BMW claims the new 4 Series models “promise and deliver class-leading design, performance, infotainment, connectivity and advanced driver assist safety systems.” The all-wheel-drive 430i features a long, low body and room for five adults. It’s powered by a twin turbo 2.0-liter 4 cylinder putting out 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. It handles the 0 to 60 spint in a very capable 5.8 seconds. While it offers plenty of punch, it’s M440i that appeals to the racing driver in buyers.

The inline 6-cylinder engine powering the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupe was developed with the motorsport expertise of BMW M GmbH and comes with weight-optimized pistons and connecting rods as well as a twin-scroll turbocharger with indirect charge air cooling. It generates 382 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, pushing the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupe from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.

The new 4 Series offerings begin production in July with the first ones hitting the streets in August. The 430i comes in at $44,800 while the M440i starts at $58,000 with a destination charge of $995 for both.

BMW Shows Off Newest EVs: iX and i4

BMW is keeping up with the Joneses when it comes to new electric vehicles, showing off the long awaited iX and i4 today to the U.S. public.

The new BMW iX puts out 516 horsepower and races from stop to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds.

The new models offer something for all tastes: a new utility model as well as a coupe-style sedan and its first-ever M-branded EV, the i4 M50 — not that performance will be an issue for any of the new models.

The 2022 iX xDrive50 debuts as a “new generation” sport-activity vehicle for the Bavarian automaker. Unfortunately, those in the U.S. wanting to take part in its debut are going to have to wait until Q1 next year for it arrive in America.

When it does arrive, they’ll be very happy, sliding behind the wheel of a 516-horsepower all-electric beast that runs from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds — with an estimated range of 300 miles per charge.

The new i4 eDrive40 boasts 335 hp and 300 miles of range.

Not only does it drive fast, the iX charges fast with DC fast charging at up to 200 kW, available 5G and Personal eSIM support. It also offer plenty of room for passengers with an open, airy cabin featuring a single-piece panoramic glass roof with electrochromic shading.

Impressive on the inside

In addition, it follows the trend of others in the luxury space with the BMW Curved Display and iDrive 8, BMW Digital Key Plus with ultra-wideband radio technology, available Bowers and Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound with 4D audio and the iconic BMW kidney grille serving as an intelligent sensor panel with self-healing capabilities.

The new SAV aimed to offer “an exhilarating driving experience combined with a sense of well-being for both drivers and passengers all the while enjoying the journey with safety, security and in luxury,” the company said.

A more powerful iX M60 model, with over 600 hp and the first all-electric Sports Activity Vehicle from BMW M GmbH, is planned for the future. The new iX xDrive50 starts at $83,200 with destination charges of $995.

The 2022 BMW i4 M50 is the company’s’ first-ever all-electric M-branded performance offering.

The flip side

While sedans are on the outs, they’re still viable in electrified form and the new i4 borrows from BMW’s coupe-like styling for many of its performance models. The i4 blends the functionality and space of the gran coupe design with the instantaneous power delivery of BMW’s fifth generation eDrive, the automaker says.

Class-leading driving dynamics and long-distance comfort, elegant design, uncompromising workmanship, cutting-edge user-vehicle interface and advanced infotainment and driving assistance technologies all combine to deliver a zero-emissions BMW worthy of the Ultimate Driving Machine moniker.

Power is provided by BMW’s latest 5th generation eDrive technology which combines the electric motors, power electronics, charging system and high-voltage battery. The electric motor, power electronics and transmission share one compact housing while the high-voltage battery measures only 4.3-inches in height and is mounted low in the floor of the new i4 for improved vehicle agility.

First Look: 2022 BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupe

The BMW B8 Gran Coupe strikes a balance between performance and grand touring comfort.

For those who might think the BMW 8 Series is a little too plebian, perhaps a little underpowered, there’s an alternative coming: the 2022 BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupe.

BMW has had a long-running, though traditionally limited, relationship with Alpina going back decades. The tuner, formally known as Alpina Burkard Bovensiepen GmbH, has given its deft touch to a number of different products throughout the years. That currently includes versions of the 3 and 7 Series, as well as the X7. The 2022 B8 marks the first time Alpina has taken on BMW’s top-line 8 Series.

Starting with the 4-door Gran Coupe, Alpina gives the B8 a boost in performance – with its top speed nudging just past 200 mph. The 8 Series V-8 also gets a customized exhaust note to match the added power. There are a number of exterior tweaks, with an emphasis on functional aerodynamic enhancements. And, in typical Alpina fashion, the B8 Gran Coupe also delivers a more luxurious interior package than the more run-of-the-mill BMW 8 Series.

Appealing to all the senses

The 2022 BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupé gives a big bump to the 8 Series V-8.

The Alpina B8 Gran Coupe “combines the highest levels of performance, dynamics and comfort in a bold and beautiful design,” BMW proclaims in a news release. “The new Alpina B8 Gran Coupé is truly an exclusive automobile that appeals to all your senses.“

As with prior Alpina offerings, the upgrade process begins under the hood. The twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 found in standard versions of the 8 Series gets a big bump in output, at 612 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. Only the M8 Competition, at 617 hp, managed to deliver more power in an 8 Series shell.

The V-8 is paired with an 8-speed Alpina Switch-tronic gearbox developed in partnership with ZF. Power, in turn, is directed to all four wheels through the BMW xDrive system. And as long as the 21-inch tires can hook up, Alpina claims the B8 will launch from 0 to 60 in just 3.3 seconds, with a top speed of 201 mph.

Sounding off

The BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupé features all-wheel-steering. It enhances low-speed maneuverability, while enhancing handling at high speeds.

To add a little more emphasis, the B8 Gran Coupe gets a customized exhaust system that Alpina dubs “a stainless steel wonder.” It is designed to reduce backpressure while also enhancing the auditory quality of the engine.

Switching driver modes between “Comfort” and “Sport” will adjust the sound by controlling active exhaust flaps. The mode selector also regulates transmission operation, throttle response, steering and the B8’s active suspension damping system.

Unlike the familiar BMW M models, Alpina navigates a different path towards performance, putting an equal emphasis on driving comfort. Think of it as more in the grand touring tradition. The suspension features revised front axle struts, Eibach springs and reinforced sway bars.

The B8 also adopts an Integral Active Steering system with active all-wheel-steering technology developed by ZF. The rear wheels can pivot up to 2.3 degrees, depending upon driver input and vehicle speed.

To scrub off speed, the Alpina gets a modified four-piston Brembo brake package, 15.6-inch discs up front and 15.7-inch in the rear.

With Alpina, it’s all about the details. The B8 Gran Coupé features a laser-etched crystal iDrive controller.

Balancing form and function

As with earlier Alpina entries, the B8 features a number of exterior upgrades that put an emphasis on functionality. That includes larger front air intakes, and a modified rear apron with a black diffuser insert, as well as a small rear spoiler lip.

Inside, the Gran Coupe features a number of new Alpina details, including illuminated door sills, unique walnut trim, a modified steering wheel and a crystal glass iDrive controller with a laser-etched Alpina logo.

Options range from a Bowers & Wilkens surround sound package to a super-light carbon roof.

The 2022 BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupe will land in U.S. showrooms by late spring and carry a base price of $139,900. Add to that a $995 delivery fee.

First Look: 2022 BMW M5 CS

BMW rolled out its 2022 M5 CS sedan offering fans impressive mix of power and luxury.

For those looking for a balanced blend of power and luxury, the BMW M5 has long been a top pick. Now, the Bavarian automaker is set to push things to new extremes, at least on the performance front, with the introduction of the 2022 M5 CS.

The limited-edition “super sedan” will punch out a solid 627 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, making it the most powerful production vehicle BMW has ever brought to market. And that’s only part of the story.

By putting a premium on lightweighting and traction enhancement, BMW aims to ensure all that power goes to the pavement. That means a factory rated top speed of 190 mph, and a 0-60 launch time of 2.9 seconds.

The new M5 CS is the most powerful sedan ever introduced by the Bavarian automaker.

“The new limited production super sedan builds on the immensely capable M5, itself recently updated for model year 2021, by delivering more power, greater performance, lighter weight and exclusive interior appointments making the new M5 CS truly a one-of-a-kind vehicle in its class,” the automaker blared in a news release introducing the 2022 performance sedan.

The heart of this beast is BMW’s S63 4.4-liter M TwinPower twin-turbocharged V-8. It makes 10 more hp than the marque’s previous record setter, the M5 Competition model. And the CS sedan’s torque band is wider, as well.

Credit improvements to the powertrain’s high-pressure direct injection and liquid-to-air intercooling for both turbos and oil system. That, the automaker claims, will allow the M5 CS to pose a formidable challenge both on the street, as well as on the track.

Power is fed through an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission into a performance-enhanced version of BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The rear-biased AWD package is aided by an electronically controlled clutch and Active M Differential.

“The driver can select from three xDrive modes including 4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD,” added BMW. “The Dynamic Stability Control system can be adjusted between three settings to further enhance driver control – DSC ON, MDM (M Dynamic Mode) and DSC OFF.”

Improvements to the powertrain’s high-pressure direct injection and liquid-to-air intercooling for both turbos and oil system make a massive difference.

The bump in horsepower is only one step BMW took to enhance performance, however. The 2022 BMW M5 CS also makes extensive use of CFRP and other lightweight materials. All told, the automaker shaved off a full 220 pounds compared to the older M5 Competition model which, in turn, helped reduce 0-60 times by 0.2 seconds. It’s a modest number but can add up to a big win on the track.

The performance experience is further enhanced, BMW explains, by the M Sound system which changes the exhaust note depending upon the sedan’s driving mode, such as Sport and Sport+. The settings also adjust various vehicle settings, including the reconfigurable gauge cluster and Head-Up display. In Sport mode, for example, the tach, digital speed, gear and shift lights are displayed in the center of the cluster, along with coolant temperature, tire pressure and G-forces.

To further enhance driving dynamics, the CS chassis and suspension have been revised, with engine mounts and springs now stiffer than the M5 Competition Package, and a ride height lowered by 0.2 inches.

To scrub off speed, meanwhile, the M5 CS features standard carbon ceramic brakes with red six-piston front calipers and a single-piston rear floating caliper. The package is a full 51 pounds lighter than the M Compound brakes used in the M5 Competition model.

Visually, the 2022 BMW M5 CS features a CFRP roof and hood, front splitter, mirror caps, rear diffuser and rear spoiler. There’s also a gold bronze finish to the familiar BMW kidney grille surround. The CS also gets 20-inch forged light alloy wheels shod, BMW notes with “20-inch M forged Y-spoke wheels – 9.5 J x 20 in front and 10.5 J x 20 in the rear. Pirelli P Zero Corsa performance tires are available as a no cost option and make full use of the M5 CS’s enhanced handling capabilities.”

The CS is the first M5 set up specifically for four passengers, with carbon sport seats up front and twin buckets in the rear.

The cabin is outfitted in special Alcantara and black merino leather with distinctive BMW M tri-color stitching.

Production is set to begin in March and the 2022 BMW M5 CS will carry an MSRP of $142,000 plus $995 in delivery fees.

BMW Takes U.S. Luxury Sales Crown for 2020

The 2020 BMW X3 xDrive30e offers performance and style in a very attractive wrapper. The company took the top sales spot for luxury automakers in the U.S.

Depending on how you count, BMW appears to have to emerged as the best-selling luxury brand in the United States, pushing past archrival Mercedes-Benz, which fell two spots to third place.

In the fourth quarter of 2020, BMW brand sales totaled 98,750 vehicles, only a 2% decrease from the 100,797 vehicles sold in the fourth quarter of 2019, for the full year 2020, BMW brand sales dropped 17.5% on total sales of 278,732 compared to the 338,003 vehicles sold in 2019.

Lexus sold a total of 275,041 passenger cars and utility vehicles moved into second place, nosing out Mercedes-Benz. For the full year, Lexus sales dropped 8.3% in 2020.

Mercedes-Benz USA reported sales of 78,078 vehicles during the fourth quarter. On a full-year basis, MBUSA recorded sales of 274,916 Mercedes-Benz passenger vehicles as fell behind BMW. In addition, MBUSA also sold 50,999 Mercedes-Benz vans, which include some luxury vehicles and commercial vehicles, bringing MBUSA’s total sales to 325,915 units, a decrease of 8.9% versus 2019.

Lexus rode its utility-vehicle sales to a second-place finish in the luxury segment for 2020, passing Mercedes-Benz.

“There is no doubt that 2020 was a challenging year for automotive sales, but we have found that these challenges were due more to the circumstances, rather than consumer demand,” said Bernhard Kuhnt, president and CEO, BMW of North America.

“We owe our dealers and regional teams a lot of credit for their flexibility and dedication while adapting to the situation. With their support we felt very confident throughout the second half of the year as consumer deliveries grew quickly — even exceeding own expectations.”

Despite the challenges posed by the ongoing global pandemic, BMW brand sales in the U.S. improved significantly in the second half of the year – including several outstanding months – as the sales network reopened, production restarted, and inventory levels improved.

The last four months of the year were particularly strong, owing much to increased production at Plant Spartanburg, which helped meet customer demand for top-selling models such as the BMW X3, X5 and X7 Sports Activity Vehicles.

BMW and Mercedes have been trading the top position for the past several years, but Mercedes’ drop to third position. However, the brand expects to be back on top in short order with an influx of product.

Mercedes may have slipped two spots in 2020, but it’s counting on a wave of new products to put it back on top in the U.S. in 2021.

Dimitris Psillakis, president and CEO of MBUSA said, “We are excited to introduce nine new models in the months ahead, including the all-new S-Class and the EQS electric, and continue to leverage the natural market gravitation of SUVs.”

In addition, sales of Mercedes-AMG high-performance models increased 29.1% to 11,128 units, which pushed the sub-brand to its best-year ever as sales increased 1.5% to 34,079 vehicles.

Audi, the third of the popular German luxury brands, reported its sales dropped 4.8% in the fourth quarter and its sales for the full year declined 17% to 186,620.

Volvo Car USA reported 14,244 cars sold in December, up 15.2% compared with 2019 and its seventh consecutive month of year-over-year growth. The company finished 2020 up 1.8% from last year with a total of 110,129 cars sold. The monthly result continued a strong upward trend, which saw the brand up 40% in December 2019 over 2018.

“Given the challenges our industry faced this year, I am humbled by what our employees and retail partners were able to achieve together,” said Anders Gustafsson, senior vice president, Volvo Car Americas and president and CEO, Volvo Car USA.

Sales by Cadillac, General Motors’ top brand, saw its sales drop 17.1% in 2020 to 129,495. GM executives are hoping the new Escalade will boost Cadillac’s fortunes in 2021. Meanwhile, Lincoln, Ford Motor Co.’s luxury brand, reported a 6.1% decline in sales to 105,410 units. Much like it’s Detroit-based competitor, it’s counting on its recently rounded out line-up of utes to grow sales in 2021.
