Ford Fusion Could Stage a Return — This Time in Crossover Form

Rumors are flying that the Ford Fusion is coming back as the Fusion Active: a crossover.

The once-popular Ford Fusion nameplate appeared to be heading off to the great junkyard in the sky last year as the automaker set off to eliminate its passenger car line-up, but it may soon make a comeback.

Images leaked out on Instagram show what appears to be an all-new version of the Fusion, albeit this time in in crossover form that, some are speculating, will be dubbed the Fusion Active. The images, along with insider tips, suggest it will fall somewhere between a classic CUV body style and a conventional wagon, on the order of the Subaru Outback or the short-lived Buick Regal TourX.

The exact source of four images, three showing partial exterior details, the last a bit of the interior, have been circulating online after originating on some Chinese websites. But rumors of a Fusion revival have been out there since even before Ford finally shut down U.S. production of the midsize Fusion sedan last August.

If it is actually a revival of the Fusion nameplate, it’s unlikely to hit the U.S. until 2022.

If all this proves accurate, we can expect to see the Fusion Active come to the U.S. market in the next couple years — though it may make its initial debut in Europe under the Mondeo badge used for the sedan outside of the States.

There’s no question that the crossover market is hot. According to IHS Markit, utility vehicles, overall, could account for 55% of the new products sold in the U.S. this year. But products in the nether world between wagons and CUVs have been a mixed bag: the Outback a consistent seller, the TourX never gaining serious traction.

Beyond the tall wagon exterior, the single interior shot reveals a high-tech focus, starting with a dashboard that is all but entirely covered by video screens. While there’s no way to get the measuring tape out, the displays appear to cover nearly as much territory as in the latest-generation Cadillac Escalade, and only slightly less than in the Byton M-byte prototype that debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show last January.

Like automakers in general, Ford has been growing the size of the screens in its latest vehicles, the new Mustang Mach-E being the best example. But that laptop computer-sized display doesn’t come near to covering as much real estate. One is left wondering how even the latest version of the Ford Sync entertainment system would be used to fill up such a large display setup. Then again, Ford has suggested it could use its in-car displays to deliver entertainment — at a price.

The Fusion Active certainly gets a focus on technology with a massive screen or set of screens on the dashboard.

There is also the possibility that what we’re looking at is a concept vehicle, rather than the final production model. Massive video displays have become the hot design element of the moment, much like all-glass roofs and sideview cameras were a few years back.

As far as powertrains are concerned, speculation centers around several options, including a version of the 250-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo-4 offered in the latest Ford Escape. But several electrified packages also appear to be in the works, including one using a 2.5-liter gas engine eschewing conventional turbochargers in favor of twin electric motors. All-wheel drive is a certainty, though the hybrid system is likely to for a through-the-road AWD layout with no connecting driveshaft.

Chances are the Ford Fusion/Mondeo Active will debut late in 2022 or even early 2023. It would not just fill a gap left by the demise of the Fusion but also flesh out the automaker’s broad SUV line-up.

Tesla’s Latest System Update Sounds Like Real Gas

Tesla’s latest update for its vehicles allows some of them to fart at passersby.

Tesla’s are aspirational vehicles for many because they can be super fast, drive by themselves with supervision for short periods of time and they’re the first viable daily driver EV that is kind of affordable in the U.S.

However, it’s also the irreverence that CEO Elon Musk continues to infuse the Model S, 3, X and Y with that also makes them appealing. Being able to watch movies, play games or even enjoy a fire (or at least a looped video of one) while you’re in the vehicle is just icing on the cake.

Now, the California-based EV leader is looking to share his innate silliness enjoyed by owners with people outside the vehicle with a new feature called “Boombox.” Part of the latest vehicle update package, it allows owners to download up to five sounds that drivers can use to “honk” at passersby — and yes, a fart noise is one of them.

Using the massive touchscreen, Tesla owners can set up their 2019 or new vehicles to play music outside like the ice cream man or for a tailgate.

The engineers patch these sounds through a small speaker in the front of the vehicle, which already emits a low whirring sound designed to inform pedestrians that a Tesla EV is nearby. Unfortunately, this speaker only arrived in 2019 or new model year Teslas.

In addition to passing gas at people on the street, you can bah like a goat, applaud, play the song “La Cucaracha” as well as other sounds. Once you load the noises of your choice into the system, drivers only need to hit the horn to brighten people’s day with applause as they walk down the sidewalk.

There are a few “restrictions.” The sounds are deactivated while the vehicle is in motion so the only sounds coming out of the speaker is the aforementioned whirring noise or the regular horn so the driver to express dismay, alarm, anger or some other necessary warning to others on the road.

However, since there are no rules on what sound must come from the vehicle to warn pedestrians of that an EV is in the area, the system can be set up to play downloaded noises continuously. The siren from a fire truck, ambulance or police car, although appealing, is not an option here. The speaker can also be used to stream music while parked as events like tailgates, picnics, etc.

The Model 3 would be the first vehicle Tesla exported to India, which could lead to a production site later.

“Boombox” wasn’t the only upgrade owners got recently. Others include updates to the driving visualizer, cabin preconditioning when unplugged, Supercharger display enhancements and new games. The new games include The Battle of Polytopia, Cat Quest and Solitaire.

In addition to the newest updates, Musk realigned the company’s expected move into India. Originally slated for next month, he told a Twitter follower that it wouldn’t be in January, “but definitely this year.” The company will start with vehicle sales in the world’s second most-populous country and later may add production, depending upon demand.

Plans call for the Model 3, the least expensive of Tesla’s offerings, to hit the subcontinent first, with prices expected to start at over $74,739, or 5.5 million Indian rupees, according to a report in the Economic Times on Saturday.

Hyundai Acquires Robotics Firm Boston Dynamics for $1.1 Billion

Hyundai Motor Group spent $1.1 billion to acquire a controlling stake in Boston Dynamics.

In a deal valued at $1.1 billion, Hyundai Motor Group is acquiring a controlling interest in Boston Dynamics from SoftBank Group Corp. Hyundai will hold an 80% stake in the company, with SoftBank retaining 20% through an affiliate.

“The synergies created by our union offer exciting new pathways for our companies to realize our goal – providing free and safe movement and higher plane of life experiences for humanity,” said Euisun Chung, Hyundai’s chairman, in a statement.

It is Chung’s first acquisition since taking on Hyundai Motor Group’s top office in October, although his ambitions in the field of robotics is well known. He has already said that he expects robotics to account for 20% of Hyundai’s future business, with urban air mobility accounting for 30%, and traditional auto manufacturing at 50 percent.

The move lessens Hyundai Motor Group’s reliance on car manufacturing by expanding into robotics, which the company has been suggesting it would do for several years. Hyundai introduced wearable exoskeleton robots named Mex, Vex and Cex at CES in 2017 and 2018, with intention of commercialization.

Euisun Chung, who was just inaugurated as Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, orchestrated the deal for Boston Dynamics.

And while Hyundai Robotics is already established in the robotics field, producing wheeled robots used in factories and warehousing, Boston Dynamics produces mobile robots with advanced mobility, dexterity, intelligence, navigation and perception.

The most famous example is “Spot”, a disturbingly lifelike robotic dog that was used in October by New York Police Department at crime scenes. Boston Dynamics also built “Atlas,” a two-legged robot that can jump and do somersaults.

The South Korean automaker plans to use Boston Dynamics’ expertise to expand its presence the humanoid robot market, where the devices could perform services such as caregiving for hospital patients. But the company also believes that robotic technologies can play a crucial role in autonomous driving solutions.

Born out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the early 1990s, Boston Dynamics was bought by Google in 2013. Four years later, it was sold to SoftBank. Under SoftBank, the company has tried to better commercialize its technology. The transaction is expected to close by June of 2021; however, the deal doesn’t mean that Hyundai is the only automaker focusing on robotics.

In May 2019, Ford Motor Co. announced a partnership with Agility Robotics of Oregon to develop a last-mile logistics solution using Ford’s autonomous vehicles and Agility’s two-legged robot, “Digit.” Ford received its first two robots in January.

Additionally, Toyota built a 6-foot, 10-inch basketball-shooting robot last year that hit five out of eight from behind the three-point arc and made 75% of its free throws ­— better than NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal’s best year in either category. Honda’s had a long history of producing human-like robots that can dance, kick a soccer ball and even ride a motorcycle.

First Look: 2021 Jaguar XF

Jaguar’s not giving up on the “saloon” market as evidenced by the new XF sedan.

There was a time when the idea of a Jaguar SUV seemed totally incongruous. These, days, however, models like the E- and F-Pace dominate the British marque’s sales. But don’t expect to see Jaguar walk away from its classic sedan line-up. An all-new version of the top-line XJ is in the works and, for 2021, the brand has a significant update of the XF line ready to roll into showrooms in the coming weeks.

It may be just a “mid-cycle refresh,” in industry parlance, but the changes for the new model year are significant, with updated styling intended to fall more in line with the big F-Pace crossover, new powertrain options, an upgraded interior that includes a next-generation infotainment system, and the ability to use smartphone-style over-the-air software updates.

“Taking inspiration from the F-Type,” Jaguar suggests. The 2021 XF “saloon car” adopts ultra-thin quad headlights that also pick up on the sports car’s Double J-Blade daytime running lights. But the overall look is more in line with the current version of the F-Pace crossover, starting with the bolder grille finished in a diamond mesh design.

“The significant new elements of the XF create a more dynamic stance for the car, but the small details are just as important,” said Adam Hatton, Jaguar Exterior Design director. “Bringing the heritage-inspired detailing to the grille and headlights adds that touch of depth and luxury with a link to Jaguar’s unparalleled past, while the Leaper emblem on the side vents is instantly recognizable and provides an added visual flourish.”

Inside, the cabin now adopts open-pore woods and laser-etched speaker grilles, while adding the new JaguarDrive Selector. The updated XF also gets a new active noise cancellation system.

“From its driver focused cockpit to the enhanced tactility, comfort and convenience, the interior has been fully transformed,” said Julian Thomson, Design Director, Jaguar.

But passengers are first likely to notice the 11.4-inch HD curved glass touchscreen that anchors the more driver-focused cockpit. The screen itself curves gently to follow the profile of the instrument panel. And it links the driver to the new Pivi Pro infotainment system. An upgraded version of the technology found in the outgoing model, it features twin-SIM technology, the two separate 4G LTE modems capable of speeding up operations ranging from audio streaming to the download of software using the XF’s new over-the-air, or OTA capabilities.

For 2021, U.S. buyers will have two powertrain options, a 246-horsepower version of the 2.0-liter turbo-four cylinder offered in the various versions of the Jaguar XF P250. The inline-four gets a bump up to 296 hp in the XF P300 R-Dynamic SE with power sent to all four wheels.

The P25- can hit 60 in just 6.5 seconds, according to Jaguar, the P300 cutting that to 5.8 seconds.

One thing missing from the new XF is any form of hybrid powertrain, something parent Jaguar Land Rover has begun adding to a number of other model lines. That includes the 2021 F-Pace update which adds mild hybrid technology in the U.S. and a new plug

That said, company officials hinted that there could be more to come under the hood of the XF during the next few years.

The XF P300 also features a new JaguarDrive  Control system, the rotary knob located next to the JaguarDrive shifter allowing a motorist to choose from four different modes. The system automatically adjusts vehicle functions including steering, transmission shifts, throttle response and the adaptive suspension damping system. Those dampers can respond to road conditions and driver inputs as frequently as 500 times a second.

Jaguar has not yet released fuel economy numbers for the sedan, nor has it said if there will be any increase in pricing. The 2020 XF starts at $51,100 before factoring in delivery fees.

Marinello’s Front-Drive Omologato is a One-Off Masterwork

The Ferrari Omologato is just the 10th one-off vehicle it’s produced in the last decade.

Ferrari’s 812 Superfast certainly lives up to its name, the $335,000 front-engine super car launching from 0-60 in a mere 2.9 seconds, on the way to a 211 mph top speed. But, from a design standpoint, it leaves much to be desired, according to many reviewers.

If you have the money, it seems, that isn’t a problem. An otherwise unnamed but “discerning European client” approached Ferrari about coming up with a one-off, coach-built alternative. And that is what you’re looking at, the renamed Ferrari Omologato.

The goal, according to the Italian automaker was to come up with a “timeless shape … certain to leave a lasting impression.”

The coach-built Omologato is based on the 812 Superfast’s platform.

“To achieve this,” Ferrari said in a statement, “the designers unlocked every possible area of freedom from the underlying package of the 812 Superfast, keeping only the windscreen and headlights as existing bodywork elements.”

Obviously, the mid-front layout of the 812’s potent, 6.5-liter V-12 wasn’t going to change. But the platform offered plenty of opportunity to fix what was wrong in the first place. And, to get there, the design team reached back into Ferrari history, lifting things like the brand’s classic rounded taillights and louvered windows.

“A fitting one-off exercise, the Omologata manages to encompass a range of subtle Ferrari signature design cues without falling into nostalgia,” the automaker’s statement suggests. “Its hand-crafted aluminium bodywork is sprinkled with almost subliminal details, in a way that challenges the enthusiast to identify the various sources of inspiration that played a part into its inception.”

Look closely and you will see the influence of the legendary 250 GTO, and even the Ferrari F1. The track influence is apparent in the crackled paint, inside and out.

Notes Ferrari, “Inside the car, a plethora of trim details suggests a strong link to Ferrari’s rich racing heritage. The electric blue seats, finished in a tasteful combination of leather and Jeans Aunde® fabric with 4-point racing harnesses, stand out against a full black interior. In the absence of rear quarter lights and screen, the atmosphere in the cabin is purposeful, reminiscent of a bygone era. Metal parts on the dashboard and steering wheel are finished with the crackled paint effect associated with the great GT racers of the 1950s and 1960s.”

Whether the Ferrari achieves its goal and really does “ooze street presence” is likely going to trigger a long-running debate. But, if nothing else, that European buyer can be assured there will be nothing like the Omologato which is only the 10th one-off GT the automaker has produced during the past decade.

There’s no indication that the project saw any custom work done to the 812’s drivetrain while transforming it into the Omologato. Not that there’s really any need. The 6.5-liter V-12 punches out 789 horsepower, an astounding 4.81 pounds per horsepower.

The project was led by the automaker’s design chief Flavio Manzoni and took a full two years to bring to completion. How much did that buyer have to stroke a check for? Chivalrously, Ferrari isn’t saying, but word is that this pushed up into the seven figure range, clearly several times more than what the “base” 812 Superfast went for.
