Independent repair shops and aftermarket parts retailers have been pitted against major automakers and their dealer networks in Massachusetts for years. The state has served as the primary battleground for right-to-repair legislation that would permit/prohibit customers and independent entities from working on or modifying vehicles. However, a major victory came on Tuesday after voters overwhelmingly approved a ballot measure updating existing right-to-repair laws to give vehicle owners and small shops better access to vehicle data typically reserved for industry giants.

The resulting decision gives consumers substantially more control over what’s done with the data being harvested by the industry (often without their knowledge) and frees up their options on who to go to when their vehicle needs fixing.

Full disclosure: this is one of those topics where I fall so hard on one side of this issue that I have to admit to my bias upfront to avoid looking like I’m acting in bad faith. I staunchly support right-to-repair laws in all forms and find the industry opposition to them reprehensible. Owners should absolutely have access to the data their vehicles generate and independent repair shops should have access to the tools used by branded service centers.

With that out of the way, it’s at least fairly obvious why industry players want to discourage the right-to-repair movement. They want the impunity to harvest driving data without someone looking over their shoulder and nullify the scant amount of competition that comes from do-it-yourself types and independent garages.

The Alliance for Automotive Innovation (which represents practically every car manufacturer currently selling in the U.S.) has repeatedly stressed the importance of modernizing vehicles with “mobility” features, like data acquisition. But it hasn’t been too keen on sharing said data with customers. It has claimed that the accumulated info could be dangerous and open consumers up to privacy/security concerns. While this begs the question of why they’re harvesting on-road data if it’s so freaking dangerous, only the most naive person would come to any answer other than it making them money.

Of course, the Alliance for Automotive Innovation (AAI) can blame businesses for being greedy too. It’s has been claiming aftermarket retailers and small shops just want the data for themselves. While technically true, some amount of data procurement is required just to work on modern vehicles and it’s not like anybody truly believes one business entity is going to act more responsibly with consumer info than another.

John Bozzella, CEO of AAI has also said government regulators have shared concerns about security — referencing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration specifically, according to Automotive News. He claimed the NHTSA shared concerns about some of the language used in the ballot measure.

“Automakers have made available all the diagnostic and repair information that is needed to service a vehicle safely and securely. That consumer choice will not change,” he said. “Moving forward, automakers will continue their work to protect our customers and prioritize their safety, privacy and vehicle security.”

The updated law expands access to mechanical data related to vehicle maintenance and repair by requiring automakers to make available all mechanical information needed to diagnose and repair vehicles as well as perform routine maintenance starting with 2022 models. It also gives vehicle owners and independent repair shops access to real-time mechanical data from telematics — systems that collect and wirelessly transmit information such as crash notifications, remote diagnostics and navigation from the vehicle to a remote server.

Meanwhile, right-to-repair supporters (including the Auto Care Association and retailers like O’Reilly Auto Parts) have claimed the passed initiative closes a loophole in the current law that exempts data transmitted wirelessly through telematics system from being shared and will ultimately give vehicle owners more choice and control over how their data is used.

The ballot passed with 75 percent of voters in Massachusetts supporting. Right-to-repair advocates have called it an important victory and feel the state should continue setting a national example.

Former VW, Porsche, BMW and Tesla Execs Join Forces at New EV Startup

Several top former auto execs are joining forces at Piech Automotive in Switzerland. The first EV will be the GT2 coupe.

While it may not be quite as well known as that of the Porsche family, the Piech name is equally storied among automotive insiders and enthusiasts. Together, these frequently squabbling relatives can lay claim to having helped create two of the European industry’s most important brand names: Porsche and Volkswagen. And now, the Piech name will be applied to a new sports car being launched as part of a new, all-electric marque based in Switzerland.

Piech Automotive plans to have its first model, the GT2, in showrooms late in 2022, with at least two other models to follow.

The company might be dismissed as just one of the many startups hoping to profit from the global transition from internal combustion to electric propulsion, but there are several reasons why it deserves a closer look. The most significant is the fact that it is being run by a high-powered group of former Porsche, BMW, Tesla and Volkswagen executives, notably including one Matthias Mueller.

The Piech GT2 will reportedly race from 0 to 62 mph in less than three seconds.

Mueller was a one-time head of the Porsche brand and rose to become the CEO of Volkswagen AG after the German automaker’s diesel emissions scandal broke in 2015. He was subsequently ousted in a boardroom coup three years later, replaced by Herbert Diess who had been recruited from BMW.

Mueller now will serve as the chairman of Piech Automotive and his appointment comes at a critical time.

The BEV startup first showed off what was then called the Piech Mark Zero concept at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show and has been pushing for funding ever since. It expects the next funding round underway now will help it raise enough capital to take the sports car into production – newly renamed the Piech GT2.

In what is now the norm for electric vehicle design, the GT2 will rely on a skateboard-like platform that will be flexible enough to handle multiple “top hats,” or bodies, with two more apparently in development, according to the company.

Also in an approach becoming quite common among high performance BEV brands, the GT2 will rely on a three-motor layout, one on the front axle, two in the rear. The combined package set to deliver 450 kilowatts of power, or 603 horsepower. That will be enough, Piech claims, to hit 100 kph, or 62 mph, in “under three seconds.”

The new GT2 will put out 603 horsepower and can be charged from zero to 80% full in just 40 minutes and 40 seconds.

While the size of the battery pack hasn’t been disclosed, the two-seater is said to have a range of 310 miles using a long-range pack, and 250 miles with the standard one. These are based on the European WLTP test cycle so, if the Piech GT2 comes to the U.S., it would likely come in 10 to 20% lower.

Recharging, meanwhile, will take as little as 40 minutes and 40 seconds from empty to 80% of capacity, Piech claims. While details of the sports car’s electric architecture hasn’t been released that would clearly indicate it can use the latest 350 kilowatt public fast chargers and operates at or above 800 volts.

Currently, the only vehicle capable of using such chargers to their full capacity is the Porsche Taycan, though it is expected to become more the norm in the years ahead as it brings charging times down to what motorists currently expect when filling a gas tank.

As for the Piech name, it is one of the family branches of the family tree linked to Ferdinand Porsche. He’s the engineering genius who helped create the original “people’s car,” or Volkswagen, and who later went on to lend his name to the eponymous Porsche sports car company.

Matthias Mueller once headed up VW and is now Piech Automotive chairman.

His most notable heir, at least within the auto industry, was Ferdinand Piech who was named Volkswagen AG CEO in 1992 and later became the company’s chairman. Piech eventually became embroiled in the diesel scandal and other controversies. He died in August 2019 at the age of 82.

Mueller, who was considered a Piech protégé, will join an assortment of former industry leaders running the new EV startup. That includes its new technical director, Klaus Schmidt, who was once a senior figure at BMW Motorsport, as well as Jochen Rudat, who set up Tesla’s European distribution network.

First Look: 2021 Jaguar XF

Jaguar’s not giving up on the “saloon” market as evidenced by the new XF sedan.

There was a time when the idea of a Jaguar SUV seemed totally incongruous. These, days, however, models like the E- and F-Pace dominate the British marque’s sales. But don’t expect to see Jaguar walk away from its classic sedan line-up. An all-new version of the top-line XJ is in the works and, for 2021, the brand has a significant update of the XF line ready to roll into showrooms in the coming weeks.

It may be just a “mid-cycle refresh,” in industry parlance, but the changes for the new model year are significant, with updated styling intended to fall more in line with the big F-Pace crossover, new powertrain options, an upgraded interior that includes a next-generation infotainment system, and the ability to use smartphone-style over-the-air software updates.

“Taking inspiration from the F-Type,” Jaguar suggests. The 2021 XF “saloon car” adopts ultra-thin quad headlights that also pick up on the sports car’s Double J-Blade daytime running lights. But the overall look is more in line with the current version of the F-Pace crossover, starting with the bolder grille finished in a diamond mesh design.

“The significant new elements of the XF create a more dynamic stance for the car, but the small details are just as important,” said Adam Hatton, Jaguar Exterior Design director. “Bringing the heritage-inspired detailing to the grille and headlights adds that touch of depth and luxury with a link to Jaguar’s unparalleled past, while the Leaper emblem on the side vents is instantly recognizable and provides an added visual flourish.”

Inside, the cabin now adopts open-pore woods and laser-etched speaker grilles, while adding the new JaguarDrive Selector. The updated XF also gets a new active noise cancellation system.

“From its driver focused cockpit to the enhanced tactility, comfort and convenience, the interior has been fully transformed,” said Julian Thomson, Design Director, Jaguar.

But passengers are first likely to notice the 11.4-inch HD curved glass touchscreen that anchors the more driver-focused cockpit. The screen itself curves gently to follow the profile of the instrument panel. And it links the driver to the new Pivi Pro infotainment system. An upgraded version of the technology found in the outgoing model, it features twin-SIM technology, the two separate 4G LTE modems capable of speeding up operations ranging from audio streaming to the download of software using the XF’s new over-the-air, or OTA capabilities.

For 2021, U.S. buyers will have two powertrain options, a 246-horsepower version of the 2.0-liter turbo-four cylinder offered in the various versions of the Jaguar XF P250. The inline-four gets a bump up to 296 hp in the XF P300 R-Dynamic SE with power sent to all four wheels.

The P25- can hit 60 in just 6.5 seconds, according to Jaguar, the P300 cutting that to 5.8 seconds.

One thing missing from the new XF is any form of hybrid powertrain, something parent Jaguar Land Rover has begun adding to a number of other model lines. That includes the 2021 F-Pace update which adds mild hybrid technology in the U.S. and a new plug

That said, company officials hinted that there could be more to come under the hood of the XF during the next few years.

The XF P300 also features a new JaguarDrive  Control system, the rotary knob located next to the JaguarDrive shifter allowing a motorist to choose from four different modes. The system automatically adjusts vehicle functions including steering, transmission shifts, throttle response and the adaptive suspension damping system. Those dampers can respond to road conditions and driver inputs as frequently as 500 times a second.

Marinello’s Front-Drive Omologato is a One-Off Masterwork

The Ferrari Omologato is just the 10th one-off vehicle it’s produced in the last decade.

Ferrari’s 812 Superfast certainly lives up to its name, the $335,000 front-engine super car launching from 0-60 in a mere 2.9 seconds, on the way to a 211 mph top speed. But, from a design standpoint, it leaves much to be desired, according to many reviewers.

If you have the money, it seems, that isn’t a problem. An otherwise unnamed but “discerning European client” approached Ferrari about coming up with a one-off, coach-built alternative. And that is what you’re looking at, the renamed Ferrari Omologato.

The goal, according to the Italian automaker was to come up with a “timeless shape … certain to leave a lasting impression.”

The coach-built Omologato is based on the 812 Superfast’s platform.

“To achieve this,” Ferrari said in a statement, “the designers unlocked every possible area of freedom from the underlying package of the 812 Superfast, keeping only the windscreen and headlights as existing bodywork elements.”

Obviously, the mid-front layout of the 812’s potent, 6.5-liter V-12 wasn’t going to change. But the platform offered plenty of opportunity to fix what was wrong in the first place. And, to get there, the design team reached back into Ferrari history, lifting things like the brand’s classic rounded taillights and louvered windows.

“A fitting one-off exercise, the Omologata manages to encompass a range of subtle Ferrari signature design cues without falling into nostalgia,” the automaker’s statement suggests. “Its hand-crafted aluminium bodywork is sprinkled with almost subliminal details, in a way that challenges the enthusiast to identify the various sources of inspiration that played a part into its inception.”

Look closely and you will see the influence of the legendary 250 GTO, and even the Ferrari F1. The track influence is apparent in the crackled paint, inside and out.

Notes Ferrari, “Inside the car, a plethora of trim details suggests a strong link to Ferrari’s rich racing heritage. The electric blue seats, finished in a tasteful combination of leather and Jeans Aunde® fabric with 4-point racing harnesses, stand out against a full black interior. In the absence of rear quarter lights and screen, the atmosphere in the cabin is purposeful, reminiscent of a bygone era. Metal parts on the dashboard and steering wheel are finished with the crackled paint effect associated with the great GT racers of the 1950s and 1960s.”

Whether the Ferrari achieves its goal and really does “ooze street presence” is likely going to trigger a long-running debate. But, if nothing else, that European buyer can be assured there will be nothing like the Omologato which is only the 10th one-off GT the automaker has produced during the past decade.

There’s no indication that the project saw any custom work done to the 812’s drivetrain while transforming it into the Omologato. Not that there’s really any need. The 6.5-liter V-12 punches out 789 horsepower, an astounding 4.81 pounds per horsepower.

The project was led by the automaker’s design chief Flavio Manzoni and took a full two years to bring to completion. How much did that buyer have to stroke a check for? Chivalrously, Ferrari isn’t saying, but word is that this pushed up into the seven figure range, clearly several times more than what the “base” 812 Superfast went for.

Tesla’s New Model S Plaid May Make You See Green

It was Battery Day, but revealing that the Tesla Model S Plaid was now available nearly stole the show.

Tesla Inc.’s long-awaited Battery Day was supposed to unveil some stunning news, and it did, but not necessarily about the company’s battery technologies.

Instead it’s product news that nearly stole headlines, starting with the company’s new Model S offering: Plaid. CEO Elon Musk showed he wasn’t content to sit on the sidelines after the recent of introduction of the Lucid Air essentially put “Baby in the corner” with a 500-mile-plus range and stunning track times.

The new Plaid version of the sedan races from 0 to 60 mph in less than 2 seconds while sprinting the quarter mile in just 9 seconds — both besting Lucid’s public times for the Air – and with a range of at least 520 miles. Yup. It’s pricey, starting at $134,000, and it can be ordered now with delivery, according to the website in “late 2021.”

Musk also noted the Plaid’s performance at Laguna Seca, which it scorched in a time of 1:30.3 and it could be about “3 seconds lower,” he noted.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company plans to build a $25,000 electric vehicle.

“We’re confident the Model S Plaid will achieve the best track time of any production vehicle ever, of any kind — two door or otherwise,” Musk bragged.

In addition to the omygoshitsfast new Model S, he revealed that the company is moving toward an as-yet-named $25,000 car. He noted that the company is “confident” it can design and manufacture a “compelling $25,000 electric vehicle so, you know, this has always been my dream from the beginning of the company.”

He also added that the new $25K EV would be autonomous and it would cost less to operate and maintain tha a gas- or diesel-powered for the same price. “So actually, it becomes even more affordable at that $25,000 price point,” pointed out Drew Baglino, senior vice president, Powertrain and Energy Engineering.

Additionally, Musk revealed that the company will build two version of the Cybertruck. He said the company had at least 600,000 pre-orders for the uniquely designed pickup truck, which is slated to be built at its future Gigafactory Texas, just outside of Austin, Texas.

Tesla’s Cybertruck will be built in two sizes, the smaller being an offering for international markets.

“The orders are gigantic,” he said. “Basically we’ve stopped counting.”

He said the company could produce between 250,000 and 300,000 annually to meet demand. He also noted that while the company wanted to try to build one version that could be sold globally, but the specs for the U.S. truck and mandates for global requirements “basically you can’t make this truck, it’s impossible.” The U.S version will be slightly larger than its international counterpart, which he described as a “tight Wolverine package.”

He also noted that the company will begin rolling out the full version Autopilot within the next two months, noting that the technology has improved dramatically. Musk said he’d been testing the “leading edge Alpha version” of the technology for months, and he realized that it needed to be completely “rewritten.” The new version uses 3D video to help with its labeling, making it 10 times more accurate than previous versions.

“It took us quite a while,” he said, adding later that “you can think about cars as laptops on wheels,” in the sense that they are more technology than the machines of the past.

Battle Between Nikola, Hindenburg Heats Up with SEC Probe

Nikola’s Trevor Milton continues to deny many parts of the recent report from Hindenburg Research accusing the company of fraud.

The battle between Nikola Corp. and Hindenburg Research is heating up as the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is now investigating the EV startup based on some of the allegations laid out in a recent report by the short-selling research firm.

Nikola, which recently finalized a $2 billion deal with General Motors, angrily denied the charges in the report, fraud being the most damning, and suggested it may file suit against the research firm about the allegations. Since then, the company has started working with SEC investigators. The SEC has not commented on the probe.

“On September 11, Nikola’s legal counsel proactively contacted and briefed the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regarding Nikola’s concerns pertaining to the Hindenburg report. Nikola welcomes the SEC’s involvement in this matter,” the company said in a statement.

In the wake of the report, the Phoenix-based company revealed it engaged law firm Kirkland and Ellis to evaluate its options. The research report, which was released Sept. 10, is titled “How to Parlay an Ocean of Lies into a Partnership with the Largest Auto OEM in America.”

Hindenburg Research’s report claims that Nikola committed fraud to get a deal with GM.

While clearly a reference to the new deal with GM, the firm claimed on its website, “Today, we reveal why we believe Nikola is an intricate fraud built on dozens of lies over the course of its Founder and Executive Chairman Trevor Milton’s career.”

The ongoing news temporarily put GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra on the hot seat during a question-and-answer session during her online appearance at the RBC Capital Markets Global Industrials Virtual Conference. Barra touted the new deal with the EV upstarts, saying that it was a great strategic fit for the automaker and its own electric vehicle development program.

“It allows us to have more people using the technology, which gives us the advantage of scale, which will help us drive costs down,” Barra said.

“And then from a fuel cell perspective, using the Hydrotec fuel cell technology, and entering a new segment for us, a growth segment, again validating our fuel cell technology, I think it starts to unlock an all-new growth area for us as it relates to fuel cells.”

GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra said earlier that the company had done due diligence on Nikola.

However, when pressed about the allegations in the Hindenburg report, including that Nikola engaged in “lies and deception” in showcasing its electric vehicle technology, including staging a video that showed one of its trucks cruising down a hill, Barra said the company had conducted its due diligence before closing the deal. She then referred further questions about Nikola to representatives of the Phoenix-based company.

Nikola was on the offensive earlier Monday, noting there were “dozens” of inaccurate statements in Hindenburg’s report, and it outlined several examples. It also made the same claims last week when the report was initially released.

Aside from denying many charges, the company is also explaining some of the them in the report, such as towing one of its truck prototypes to the top of a hill and allowing it to roll down, appearing to be operating under its own power.

“Nikola never stated its truck was driving under its own propulsion in the video, although the truck was designed to do just that (as described in previous point),” the company states. “The truck was showcased and filmed by a third party for a commercial. Nikola described this third-party video on the Company’s social media as ‘In Motion.’ It was never described as ‘under its own propulsion’ or ‘powertrain driven.’”
